Kathmandu Durbar Square

Located just past the bustling streets of Thamel, Kathmandu Durbar Square is the historic heart of the capital’s ancient royalty. This sprawling public complex features spectacular, tightly clustered architecture built by the Malla and Shah kings, characterized by heavy red brickwork and incredibly intricate dark wood carvings that have stood for centuries.

A walk through this living museum leads you past majestic courtyards, soaring pagoda-style temples, and the Hanuman Dhoka Palace. It is also the home of the Taleju Temple and the unique Kumari Ghar, the highly revered palace where the Kumari, Kathmandu’s Living Goddess resides and occasionally blesses onlookers from her carved wooden window.
